Summit Station, Day 5 (6/8/2019): Today was dedicated to moving the drill over to the Baker Hole site and getting everything setup and prepared for drilling. This included digging an additional lower trench 1.5 meters deep for core barrel removal and ice core storage (it’s 20 F cooler in the lower trench than the ground surface in the tent!). It will be very critical to keep the lower components of the drill well below freezing while the drill is removed from the hole. We also setup the control station and mounted the drill and installed the coring system. We fired everything up and all systems are a go… we should be off and drilling tomorrow! Stay tuned.
About the Exploration Technology GroupHoneybee Robotics Exploration Technology Group engineers and builds terrestrial and extraterrestrial drilling, excavation, and geotechnical systems, as well as sample acquisition, transfer and processing technologies. Because these systems are autonomous, smart, low power, light-weight, and low-mass, they have application not only in space, but here on earth in mining and petroleum applications.
