Today we experimented with a few of the autonomous parameters of the drill…at 104 meters! Clearly our confidence level has gone up. We also evaluated the inch-worming technique while coring, which worked well. Today was dedicated to experimenting with the drill and learning as much as we can while we have this rare opportunity to drill in 100-meter deep ice! We finished the day only a meter deeper at 105, but the learning experience was well worth it. Things should speed back up tomorrow and we expect to reach our maximum depth, so stay tuned!
About the Exploration Technology GroupHoneybee Robotics Exploration Technology Group engineers and builds terrestrial and extraterrestrial drilling, excavation, and geotechnical systems, as well as sample acquisition, transfer and processing technologies. Because these systems are autonomous, smart, low power, light-weight, and low-mass, they have application not only in space, but here on earth in mining and petroleum applications.
